Lutein and Zeaxanthin
These two carotenoids are elemental nutrients for healthy eyes. They are found at high concentrations in the macula (the so-called „yellow spot“ or „area of most acute vision” in the centre of the retina). Similar to a filter, they absorb harmful UV radiation, thus protecting the retina against aggressive “free radicals”.

Vitamin A
Vitamin A is the most important factor when it comes to transforming light into nerve impulses so that our brain can process what we see. The pigment molecules („visual purple“) in the retina contain large amounts of vitamin A. Each ray of light that enters the eye consumes some of these pigment molecules.
At this point, vitamin A is again needed for regeneration. In particular with regard to light/dark vision, it is important that sufficient quantities of vitamin A are available.

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)
As an antioxidant, vitamin B2 plays an essential role in many processes, such as keeping the eye lenses healthy. Vitamin B2 is also an important vital substance with regard to the health of the conjunctiva.
Furthermore, increased sensitivity to light, for instance, may be a sign of inadequate vitamin B2 supply.

Zinc
The highest concentration of zinc in the body is found in the retina. As an antioxidant, zinc assists the cells of the retina in warding off harmful “free radicals”. Moreover, the production of the vitamin A transport protein also depends on adequate zinc supply.

Selenium, vitamins C + E
Acting as antioxidants, all three of these vital substances are instrumental in the neutralisation of aggressive “free radicals”. Especially when it comes to keeping the eyes healthy, the interaction of almost all antioxidative vital substances is of particular importance.

A regular and sufficient supply of these vital substances is an important prerequisite for maintaining the health and performance of the eyes. An individual's demand will increase quite naturally with progressing age, but also due to factors such as aggressive sunlight or poor lighting over extended periods of time.

Furthermore, smoking, drinking too much alcohol, or eating a poorly balanced diet may also increase the demand for these vital substances to such an extent that an adequate supply cannot always be ensured with food alone. Foodstuffs may also lose much of their content in nutrients when stored for prolonged periods of time, or prepared inappropriately, e.g. by overcooking or warming over.
