Inulin

General
Inulin is a natural, soluble dietary fibre which enhances the intestinal flora, assisting the essential bacteria in keeping the intestines healthy.

Occurrence
Inulin is a sugar molecule with a complex structure, consisting of up to 90 monosaccharides. Inulin is a substance that occurs naturally as a reserve carbohydrate in foodstuffs such as onions, chicory, leeks, artichokes, bananas, and cereals. Inulin can be extracted from chicory roots in a procedure similar to that of making sugar from sugar beets.

Effects
As a prebiotic, inulin promotes the growth of bifidobacteria, thus enhancing the intestinal flora. For one thing, inulin serves as nourishment for lactic acid bacteria, helping them to proliferate. On the other hand, when prebiotics are degraded, certain acids are formed that create a hostile environment for pathogenic bacteria. The noteworthy effect of prebiotics is that they invigorate the intestines and boost the immune system.


Macrogol

General
Macrogol is a non-resorbable polyethylene glycol in granulate form with water-binding properties. Its mechanism of action is purely physical. Macrogol will not lose its effect over prolonged treatment periods; the dosage can be chosen as appropriate to meet individual requirements.

Effects
Macrogol serves as a carrier for the liquid (water) in which the product is dissolved. Macrogol carries the water immediately into the large intestine. There the hard, compacted stool is softened and stool volume is increased. The resulting expansion provides a stimulus that triggers the natural movements of the intestine (peristaltics). Macrogol has a purely physical effect and is not absorbed by the body. In addition, the body is supplied with electrolytes, which increase the safety of treatment.
